JOURNALIST. PHOTOGRAPHER. WRITER.
My name is Gina Nguyen, and I serve as the Editor-in-Chief for The Vision at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS).
If you had asked me or anyone who knew me just two years ago, no one would have thought I would end up where I am now. I stumbled upon the world of journalism unexpectedly and as a result of a favor to a friend. Just weeks before I started my junior year at MSMS, I received an email from the former editor-in-chief personally asking me to apply for Photography Editor. She knew I did some photography as a hobby from time to time, and it happened to be that they were looking to fill the position. I laughed it off, thinking without any real experience, I wasn’t qualified to do it for a publication. In the end, however, I submitted a last-minute application and found out a few weeks later that I had gotten the position.
Fast forward to today, I am so grateful she took a chance on me. Journalism has taught me more about myself, about my community, and about my world. It drives me to become involved and build relationships. It encourages me to discover stories--stories that make a difference--and help share them with others.
Every Thursday, I stand up in front of my staff with pride. I have been able to share my voice through journalism and encourage my peers to do the same. As my time at The Vision nears the end, I hope our publication continues to grow exponentially and to spark meaningful conversations as it reaches more and more people.
