EDITING

The goal in the editing process is to ensure the content we produce meets the quality standards expected from The Vision. In order to do this, each article passes through at least five people before being published. A copy editor, the section editor, a managing editor, and the editor-in-chief will read and edit once the article has been submitted via Google Docs. Once the writer goes back through and makes revisions, it is that writer’s responsibility to upload their article to the School Newspapers Online site. There, the article will be reviewed again by the editor-in-chief and the publication advisor.

As the editor-in-chief, my work consists of editing every piece of writing for content organization, story angles, and big ideas. The luxury of using Google Docs is that instead of simply editing and changing their work, I make suggestions and comments. Suggestions are changes made directly on the article; this is typically for corrections in Associated Press style, grammar errors, and flow of content. By allowing them to see the changes, the writers can learn from the errors and become more aware of them in the future. When I make comments, I propose questions and add content that will give the writer something to think about and consider. Rather than making changes to the content myself, I want the writer to find their own style of approaching stories.
